[52]***Aunque algo lento en comparación de otros juegos del género, su sencillez de manejo y elementos como los dichosos duendes ladrones o los niveles de magia (estrategia uso continuo frente a reserva para obtener grandes poderes) hacen de él un gran juego.

A bit short and lots of palette swapped enemies but the levels vary a lot and the gameplay is solid. Graphics are pretty well done as is the music (though not as good as the music in the Amiga version).***Three mighty heroes have a score to settle with the evil Death Adder in this classic action game. As a powerful fighter, a female amazon, or a mighty dwarf, you'll fight through Adder's henchman with weapon and magic attacks or ride the fearsome, fire-breathing beasts to your advantage.***The Genesis version is considered by many to be the second-best port to own (next to the Amiga) but is more common overall. In fact many people would refer to Golden Axe as a Genesis game rather than an arcade title; this is an indicator of its massive popularity being perhaps greater than that of even the arcade original.

As a special treat for home users who think they already know the arcade game inside and out, the game continues for 2 more levels after you think you've beaten the last boss. These two levels (and the boss they end with) are exclusive to the Genesis port. Also it has the now-familiar 'Duel' mode that has appeared in all other ports and sequels in some form or other.

When this title came out in 1989 to accompany the new console (alongside Altered Beast and SEGA's reprogrammed version of Capcom's Ghouls and Ghosts), gamers were rubbing their eyes in disbelief: here was a machine that was bringing their favourite arcade titles home. Gamers had always been forced to accept that the arcade would always give them the hottest gaming experience while consoles got cut-down ports, but the Genesis proved them wrong. Not only were their favourite games recreated almost perfectly, they had SEGA's legacy of additional game modes, options, and difficulty levels to look forward to.

Ever since, gamers have expected consoles not to be just better than the previous consoles, but to recreate arcade-perfect visuals (or in some cases Windows PC-perfect visuals). The days of arcade superiority were gone for good. And now we see arcades dropping in popularity and closing down, while there is an Xbox or similar console taking pride of place in most homes.

Trivia: (from MobyGames)
'The game is banned in Germany for violence (ban issued on 30.05.92). The game 'Golden Axe: The Duel' is not affected.'
--I have looked into this, and it appears all ports may have been affected, but certainly the Genesis, Arcade, and Amiga ports.

Even More Trivia from Mame.dk Golden Axe page
'The kanji [Japanese character] on the title screen actually reads 'Senpu', meaning 'Fighting Axe'. This is an example of 'gikun', where Japanese artists use the phonetic value of a character to determine the game's name, and not the meaning of the character itself.'

[20]***In ages long forgotten, Light fought Darkness for control of the world. Finally, the Ancients defeated the evil ruler of the dark forces known as Dark Dragon and cast him into another dimension, though he vowed to return in 1,000 years. As time passed, all memory of Dark Dragon was buried, and the land of Rune enjoyed 10 centuries of peace. Yet, as promised, the dark ruler returned, along with hordes of evil creatures that ravaged the land. As chaos erupted, several strongholds of Good still held out, awaiting a hero who could wield the Powers of Light.***Wicked game. You control Max and his army to defeat the evil Darksol before he awakens Dark Dragon, an evil incarnate sealed by the ancients a millenium ago.

Strategy-RPG where you move the characters around a battle map; the battle action is during a small cut scene. The difference with most strategy-RPGs is that this time you can also move around in towns like in regular RPGs and talk to people, etc.

Chakan  Sega1992The Forever Man

* Float under a fiend-filled sea and hack away at the Dragonfly King and his hideous Castle of Monsters.***Very, very challenging action game. Chakan is a man who is condemned to live eternally and is trying to die.
He fights with two swords and uses various combinations of potions as power-ups.

[cjlee001]***One of the best games ever. But... playing it though a emulator is real nasty, because of the games perspective and controls combined with the pc keyboard 3-key limit.

[29]***The once-peaceful kingdom so familiar to fans of the original Golden Axe is under threat once again. The Prince of Darkness has stolen the invaluable Golden Axe, taken over the kingdom and rendered its warriors harmless with an evil curse. One warrior breaks free from the curse and must defeat the prince and regain the Golden Axe to save the kingdom. In this one- or two-player action game, play as a giant, a panther or a sword-wielding human and fight your way to victory once again.***Considered the ugly duckling of the Golden Axe series by many, this game really remains faithful to the saga.

[20]***After Dark Dragon was vanquished, the land was peaceful again, until a petty theif stole the jewels of light and darkness which were used to seal an even greater evil, Zeon. The King of Devils is now loose and you must stop him.
Same style as the first one, but improvements on the gameplay here and there; some are subtles, like the improved menus, other are more obvious, like a much harder and longer game.
Probably the best music quality on the Genesis.

I really have lost count of how many times I've played through this game. It's as close as a non-FF RPG can get to being perfect.
[SamnMax]***It's a dark and stormy night in the kingdom of Granseal when a thief steals two jewels from the Tower of the Ancients. He sets in motion strange events that lead to the resurrection of Zeon, the Devil King. Granseal's king falls sick, the princess is kidnapped, and a door to Arc Valley, the Devil King's home, is opened. The young swordsman, Bowie, realizing the grave danger Granseal faces, must lead the Shining Force to find the Holy Sword and the stolen jewels, and protect Granseal against the invading armies of Zeon.***Directly from the game box (European version) :

An ancient evil has broken free, and is spreading over the land of Rune. You must lead the Shining Force into battle to recover the stolen jewels and seal the Door to Darkness. The Kingdom of Granseal is depending on you !
